Archana Ramasundaram is a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer who served for 37 years. She is from the Tamil Nadu cadre, 1980 batch and was the only woman in her entire IPS batch. But her father encouraged her and gave her the confidence to step into an unconventional profession. She joined the IPS with one clear goal — to truly make a difference. Historic Achievement: On February 3, 2016, Archana Ramasundaram created history by becoming the first woman to head a paramilitary force in India in over 60 years, assuming charge as Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), the force that guards India's borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
Recruitment is through the following competitive examinations:
Retired and serving SSB Officers carry exceptional strategic, logistical, and leadership skills that are highly valued in civilian enterprise. Many ex-SSB officers establish private security agencies, border trade facilitation consultancies, adventure tourism ventures in the Himalayan and terai regions, or NGOs focused on border community development. Their experience in terrain management, disaster relief, and multi-agency coordination provides a strong foundation for roles in logistics, risk management, and social entrepreneurship. With government welfare schemes and resettlement support, officer-entrepreneurs are well-positioned to build impactful ventures in security, tourism, and rural development.
SSB Officer roles in field operations require high physical fitness as per government-mandated standards. However, the broader MHA and CAPF ecosystem offers meaningful opportunities:
