Dr M. R. Rajagopal is widely regarded as the “father of palliative care in India” for his pioneering efforts in improving pain relief and end-of-life care. Beginning his career as an anaesthesiologist, he later dedicated himself to addressing the suffering of patients with life-limiting illnesses. He co-founded the Pain and Palliative Care Society and established Pallium India in 2003 to expand access to care. His advocacy led to major policy changes, including amendments to India’s narcotics laws, improving access to pain medication. Awarded the Padma Shri in 2018, his work has transformed palliative care across India.
