A Multi-Purpose Health Worker (MPHW) is a frontline healthcare professional who delivers primary and preventive health services at the community level – particularly in rural and underserved areas. MPHWs work under the National Health Mission (NHM) and at Sub-Centres, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and Community Health Centres (CHCs). They provide maternal and child healthcare, conduct immunisation drives, manage disease surveillance, promote sanitation and hygiene, distribute medicines, and educate communities on family planning and nutrition. The role is categorised as MPHW (Female/ANM) and MPHW (Male/Health Worker Male).

Manjulata Maharana, a Multi-Purpose Health Worker (MPHW/ANM) posted at the Sahaspur Health Sub-Centre under Kanas Block in the Puri district of Odisha, was conferred the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award for the year 2023 by the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, on 22 June 2023.
With 19 years of dedicated service, Manjulata has saved the lives of numerous women during deliveries in the labour room and even inside ambulances during floods. She has been recognised at the district level with the Best ANM award and has received multiple letters of appreciation from health authorities.
There is no national level examinations.
MPHWs can leverage their healthcare skills to establish private community clinics, mobile health units, home nursing services, and wellness centres catering to rural and peri-urban populations. With experience, they can set up Midwifery Homes, dietary counselling centres, or health and sanitation consultancy services for NGOs and local bodies. The growing demand for home-based care, especially for elderly and post-operative patients, creates strong entrepreneurial opportunities. MPHWs can also establish training centres to mentor future community health workers.
