Mining engineers assess the feasibility, safety, and productivity of mine locations. They also plan and manage the safe extraction of these resources from under the earth.
Chandrani Prasad Verma is credited to be India's first female mining engineer. She is now employed as principal scientist with the Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research in Nagpur. Verma got admission to a Diploma programme in mining with some difficulty as the management was reluctant to offer a seat to a woman. Later, for a B.Tech degree in mining, she had to take the fight to the court. Finding a job was also a challenge. Finally, in 2001, she got a job at CSIR as a project fellow. Verma has a Ph.D. in Rock Mechanics and Numerical Modelling.
