The most inspiring success story of a forest guard in Odisha is that of Mitrabhanu Naik, a dedicated 42-year-old guard whose passion for conservation literally changed the map of the Keonjhar district. Working in the Belda beat, Naik took charge of a massive afforestation project in 2021, transforming barren, mining-affected land into a lush sanctuary. His success was not just in planting 32,000 saplings but also in his ability to mobilise the local community; he revived the Van Surakshya Samitis (Forest Protection Committees) in neighbouring villages to help water and protect the trees during the harsh summer months. His extraordinary commitment resulted in a survival rate so high that the Odisha Forest Department broke with tradition to honour him personally. In a rare gesture of recognition, they named the regenerated landscapes after him—'Mitrabhanu Van', 'Mitrabhanu Van-2', and 'Mitrabhanu Van-3'—ensuring that his legacy as a "green warrior" is permanently etched into the very soil he protected

A Forest Guard can become an entrepreneur by leveraging expertise in forest resources, wildlife conservation, and eco-management. They can establish ventures such as eco-tourism services, nature camps, wildlife guiding agencies, forest-based product businesses, nursery development, medicinal plant cultivation, or environmental consultancy services. With field experience and knowledge of biodiversity conservation, they can also start training centres, sustainability initiatives, or community-based enterprises that promote conservation and rural livelihoods.
