Chandan Kumar Khuntia, an employee of SAIL Bhubaneswar from Gualigorada village in the Puri district of Odisha, started farming in 2014 out of his passion. He successfully transformed 12 acres of low-lying paddy land into cultivable upland, equipping it with a pond and a tube well to ensure adequate irrigation.
He started growing various vegetables, like bitter gourds, spiny gourds, capsicums, brinjals, and pointed gourds. He began exploring the demand for specific species of pointed gourd in the market and sought knowledge and information related to species-specific farming. Following the exploration, during his trip to Krishi Vigyan Kendra and ICAR-RCER in Patna, he learnt about better crop varieties and modern farming methods. This helped him increase his productivity and marketability.
An agricultural engineer can develop useful products like low-cost irrigation systems, farm tools, or mobile apps for soil testing. First, they identify a need, create a simple version of the solution and test it with farmers. If it works, they can build a business by selling, renting, or offering services. They should get the business registered, search for help from government programmes or startups, and use social media or local networks to spread the word about it.
